Sudanese Gov’t Discussions with the US have Failed

Sudan announced on Sunday that consultations held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the United States ended without reaching an agreement regarding Khartoum’s participation in the upcoming peace talks in Switzerland.

The peace talks, scheduled to begin on August 14, aim to address the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.
Mohamed Bashir Abu-Namo, the head of Sudan’s delegation, stated that the consultations ended without reaching an agreement on the government’s participation in the Geneva talks. “This is a recommendation to the leadership not to participate in the Geneva negotiations,” Abu-Namo said.
He emphasized that the final decision rests with the leadership, based on their assessments. He also hinted at several factors that influenced the decision to conclude the consultative dialogue without an agreement, though he did not provide specific details.
Nearly 19,000 Sudanese are believed to have been killed in the conflict that broke out into all out war 16 months ago and displaced 10 million.
