Turkey Based SNC Opposition Party Holds Meetings in US to Discuss Syria

According to “Syria TV” a delegation of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), based in Turkey, is in the US to discuss issues related to Syria. The delegation held sideline meetings with at the UN’s General Assembly in New York where they met with “Secretary-General of the UN and the Special Group on the Syrian issue, along with several representatives of Western countries for Syria and the Middle East.”

The delegation also met with Turkish ambassador, Hasan Murat Mercan, in DC and also met with US Agency for International Development (USAID) concerned with restoring basic services, economic opportunities and comprehensive governance and to discuss mechanisms for the delivery of US support to the needy in Syria and to ensure the establishment of stability in areas Northwest Syria.

One of the main purposes of the meetings are to discuss processes to ensure that US aid can reach the needy in Syria despite efforts of other “bad actors” to prohibit it. The places of concern are those “areas outside the control of the Syrian regime, especially in the northwest of the country.”

The sources quoted that the delegation will also meet with Barbara Leaf, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and the official in charge of the Syrian file at the State Department, Ethan Goldrich, in addition to a representative of the US Department of Defense to discuss developments in the Syrian file. Syria’s office in the National Security Council concludes its visit on Friday with a meeting with the Atlantic Council, an influential think tank in the field of international affairs.
