Report: Female Muslim Students Discriminated Against in India

news

The Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) released a report entitled “Impact of Hijab Ban in Karnataka’s Educational Institutions”.  The report centers around events that took place earlier this year when female Muslim students wearing the Hijab were banned from entering the classrooms and taking their exams in Karnataka, India.

The report stated: “The Karnataka State Government instead chose to ignore this unconstitutional and arbitrary action by its own employees and failed to safeguard the rights of Muslim women students not to be discriminated against.”

“The government must allow the students to enter the classrooms immediately, and in consultation with students, arrange special classes for them. The court should conduct an inquiry into why the State government took such a sudden, arbitrary and unconstitutional action,” the report said.

PUCL is the largest human rights organisation in India and has been in operation since 1980
