The opposition National Coalition warned that Iranian penetration in the eastern region of Syria has become a threat to the Syrian social fabric, as Iran exploits poverty and difficult living conditions to capitalize on a vulnerable population taking advantage of their situation to recruit and indoctrinate them.
Abdul Basit Abdul Latif, coordinator of the Al-Jazeera and Euphrates Committee in the coalition, mentions that Tehran makes use of promoting and creating sectarian division and attempts to create a Persian and Shia statelet within Syria, in the traditionally Arab and Sunni eastern region.
He said:
“Iran commits heinous crimes against the population of the country … in order to establish its feet and ensure a permanent presence of its militias.”
