Assad’s Uncle’s Four Year Sentence Upheld in Absentia

news

France’s Supreme Court issued a decision to imprison Rifaat Assad, uncle of Bashar Assad, for four years, after being tried in absentia. Rifaat, who fled to Syria in 2021, when his assets were confiscated, was found guilty on charges of laundering Syrian public funds and confiscating real estate he had illegally acquired.

It is noteworthy that Rifaat is also accused of several war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the Hama massacre. All of his property and wealth in France have been frozen by the French government.
