Arizona State University Bans Research Scholar After Confrontation with Woman in Hijab

Jonathan Yudelman, an ASU postdoctoral research scholar involved in a video-recorded altercation during a pro-Israel protest near campus, has been barred from teaching at Arizona State University, according to an announcement by the university’s president. The incident, which occurred on May 5, showed Yudelman confronting a woman in a hijab and included a heated exchange. In response to his actions, ASU has prohibited Yudelman from campus activities and teaching roles permanently.

“He will no longer be allowed on campus and is permanently prohibited from teaching at this institution,” stated Michael Crow, ASU’s president.

Yudelman was initially put on administrative leave as the university investigated the matter. Although he had resigned prior to the incident, effective June 30, he was not scheduled to teach again before his departure.

The incident has prompted responses from various community and advocacy groups. Azza Abuseif, the executive director of the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, praised ASU’s decision and called for further police action against Yudelman on harassment charges.

The confrontation occurred amidst nationwide campus demonstrations supporting Palestinian rights.
